Why it’s here: The race for the top spot was basically a coin flip between League and the movie that wound up second on the list (you’ll see that one shortly). And maybe it’s surprising that a cast with Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, Lori Petty and Geena Davis — who will forever be remembered in these parts for her role as a swashbuckling pirate in 1995’s Cutthroat Island even though she was better in 1988’s Beetlejuice — would work so well, but it does. It absolutely does.
League is an enjoyable watch whenever it comes on TV, even all these years later. And because I’m making this list, it probably doesn’t hurt that earlier in my writing career, I regularly covered independent-league baseball games in two of the ballparks where this movie was filmed, in Huntingburg and Evansville, Ind.
